Dr Nick Carragher, Clinical Psychologist, LGBTQ therapist

Dr Nick Carragher, Specialist Clinical Psychologist

“Change happens when we understand not only our thoughts and behaviours, but also the identities and environments that influence them. I aim to help people grow with both insight and self‑compassion.”

Nick is a Clinical Psychologist whose practice is grounded in compassion, supporting his clients to better understand life’s complexities and emotional difficulties with the intention of helping you to feel empowered and make changes. He prioritises thinking about how your experiences have influenced the ways in which you navigate the world and your relationships with a curiosity about ‘what have you had to go through?’ rather than ‘what is wrong with you?’.

The support that Nick offers brings in ideas from community psychology, compassion focused therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy with psychodynamic thinking woven through. He has a strong commitment to reducing barriers to access and promoting equity in mental health care. Nick’s work is shaped by an understanding that people exist within families, cultures, identities, and communities, and that effective therapy must honour all of these contexts. He takes an LGBTQI+ affirmative, culturally responsive, and anti-oppressive stance across every area of his clinical practice. Creating a space where clients feel seen, respected, and empowered is central to how he works.

How I Work

Clients often describe Nick’s style as warm, calming, and grounded with the ability to challenge where necessary. He aims to create a therapeutic relationship where you feel safe to explore alternative perspectives, build insight, and develop practical tools for change. Together, you can work toward meaningful, sustainable improvements in wellbeing.

He specialises in Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), though he draws on several evidencebased models in order to best meet clients where they are at. Nick has training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Short-term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Psychosexual Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Systemic Family Therapy, Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), and trauma-focused CBT (tfCBT). His approach is collaborative and tailored to each person’s wants and needs meaning that between you both, you will agree what feels right for you. Above all, Nick sees his clients as people first, not as a diagnosis.

In your first appointment together, you will discuss the nature of the difficulties you’re facing, explore your personal history and hopes for therapy, and then jointly agree to a plan that is unique to you as well as to the number of sessions that feels helpful and within your means.

Professional Background

Nick has clinical experience across various NHS settings, including his current roles at Barts Health NHS Foundation Trust and Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust. He works in the NHS as a Specialist Clinical Psychologist in HIV and Sexual Health Services where he offers individual and group support in adjusting to HIV diagnoses and associated stigmas, as well as for psychosexual interventions and managing compulsive or risky sexual behaviours. He has experience across a range of clinical settings including in Complex Anxiety and Depression, Refugee Psychology and Trauma, and NHS Talking Therapies.

He is a University College London trained Clinical Psychologist and as such values both reflexive clinical practice and rigorous scientific evidence-bases. While completing his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, he opted for specific training in sexual health and migration/refugee related trauma due to an interest in specialising in approaches that bring systemic barriers and oppression to the fore.

He has also been involved in research exploring the impact of online peer-support platforms for people that have experience primary care mental health services.
