ADHD Assessment

with Dr Ute Liersch, Chartered and accredited Counselling Psychologist, Chartered Coaching Psychologist HCPC and BPS accredited, UKAAN trained

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is rooted in neurobiological differences, particularly in dopamine and norepinephrine regulation within the brain’s prefrontal cortex. The ADHD under-stimulation theory posits that individuals with ADHD exhibit lower baseline dopamine activity, leading to difficulties with attention, impulse control, and motivation. To counteract this, they may engage in external stimulation-seeking behaviours such as fidgeting, excessive talking, or risk-taking. Stimulant medications work by increasing dopamine and norepinephrine levels, improving focus and self-regulation. However, an alternative perspective—the hunter-gatherer theory—suggests that ADHD traits were once advantageous in early human societies, where impulsivity, hyperfocus, and novelty-seeking facilitated survival. In today’s structured world, individuals with ADHD must navigate societal expectations that often misalign with their neurological profile. Fortunately, tailored interventions can support adaptation and success.

ADHD is a recognised developmental disorder, classified under the DSM-5 as a neurodevelopment condition. Accurate diagnosis is crucial to ensure that individuals receive appropriate support and interventions. Misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis can lead to significant challenges in academic, occupational, and personal spheres. ADHD symptoms manifest differently across individuals, with some displaying predominant inattentiveness, while others exhibit hyperactive-impulsive tendencies or a combined presentation. A thorough, evidence-based assessment is essential to distinguish ADHD from other conditions with overlapping symptoms, such as anxiety or learning disorders. Without a precise evaluation, individuals may struggle with untreated symptoms or receive ineffective interventions. Our expert-led diagnostic process ensures a validated diagnosis, leading to structured support and treatment pathways tailored to each individual’s needs.

Dr Ute provides a pre-assessment to determine whether an individual meets the threshold for a full ADHD evaluation. If so, we offer an in-depth assessment process, consisting of comprehensive questionnaires, self-reports, school and workplace feedback, and an extensive clinical interview lasting a minimum of three hours. Our rigorous diagnostic process culminates in a detailed report, outlining findings, treatment recommendations, and personalised strategies for managing ADHD effectively. Post-diagnosis, we offer a dedicated consultation to discuss next steps, ensuring that each individual receives the guidance they need.

Dr Ute Liersch, one of the few neurodivergent doctors in psychology who diagnoses ADHD, refers to psychiatrists, and runs therapy and training courses for ADHD and ADHD-like behaviour. Take the first step towards clarity and tailored support—schedule your pre-assessment today.
