“A remarkable book: beautifully written, both deft and subtle, and with a profound understanding of this gruesomely frightening eating disorder. For those readers who have no experience of the problem, Em Farrell gives us a clear resume of the history of anorexia, the various treatments used in the past along with those used in the present. She writes tellingly and touchingly of her own experience with her many patients, showing herself to be a highly intelligent, remarkably open-hearted therapist. She is as sympathetic to the problems of the family or carers as she is to the patient. Most importantly of all, she writes without jargon, in clear lucid English which anyone with or without an analytic background will appreciate, and in the final chapter she explains exactly how someone living with anorexia can take the first steps to recovery. A tremendous book.”
This book is clearly written and accessible to therapists and Clients. Factual but wrote from a personal perspective. I’m looking forward reading the rest of the series.
“Em Farrell’s book describes the painful and disturbing world of the anorectic and those who work and live alongside them, with incredible insight, sensitivity and most importantly hope. Without unnecessary jargon (this book is so ‘reader friendly’), she takes you into the difficult relationship that develops in an anorectic’s life, both with themselves and the world around them. These complicated relationships, are at times terrifying and frustrating but Em manages to describe and understand them in a way that brings meaning and shape to their existence, allowing them to be thought about on many levels. The book begins with an historical perspective, taking us on a journey into the life experiences of anorectics, including her own and other clinicians’ experiences, and ends with supportive information regarding recovery. While this book is written with anorectics, their relatives and clinicians in mind, I believe we can all learn something from the anorectics’ journey. Finally, while there are generalisable features of the worlds that individual anorectics inhabit, Em makes it clear that they all have their distinct personal battles to overcome, and can find support in many different forms. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the world of anorexia.”
