IFS is a transformative tool that conceives of every human being as a system of protective and wounded inner parts led by a core Self. Just like members of a family, inner parts are forced from their valuable states into extreme roles within us.
Internal Family Systems, otherwise known as IFS, is an approach to psychotherapy that identifies and addresses multiple sub-personalities or families within each person’s mental system. These sub-personalities are often in discord with each other and with a persons core Self, a concept that describes the person who is at the core of every individual. They often consist of parts that are wounded with painful emotions such as shame and anger and parts which are protective of the person, trying to protect the person from the pain of the wounded parts. IFS focuses on healing the wounded parts and restoring mental balance and harmony by fixing the dynamics that create conflict between the sub-personalities and the Self.
