Mentalisation-Based Therapy (MBT) is a psychotherapeutic approach designed to help individuals better understand and manage their own and others’ emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. MBT combines elements from psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and systemic therapies. The central concept of MBT is “mentalising,” which involves reflecting on and comprehending the mental states that drive actions. This therapy aims to enhance this capacity, which is often compromised in people with certain mental health conditions.
MBT is particularly effective for treating borderline personality disorder (BPD), but it also proves beneficial for issues like antisocial personality disorder, addiction, eating disorders, and depression. The therapy creates a safe and supportive environment where patients can explore their thoughts and feelings, learning to distinguish between their own mental states and those of others. This process aids in improving emotional regulation and interpersonal relationships. By fostering a deeper understanding of the intentions and emotions behind behaviours, MBT helps individuals respond more thoughtfully and less impulsively, leading to more stable and fulfilling relationships.
