A phobia is having an overwhelming and debilitating fear of an object, situation, place, animal or feeling. Phobias are more extreme than fears, developing when a person has an exaggerated or unrealistic sense of danger about a situation or object. Severe phobias can lead to a person organising their life around avoiding the subject of their anxiety, as well as it restricting their day to day life, it can also cause a lot of distress.
An example of some phobias are as follows:
- acropbhobia (fear of heights)
- agoraphobia (fear of leaving ones home, or entering open and crowded places)
- emetophobia (fear of vomit)
- arachnophobia (fear of spiders)
- aerophobia (fear of flying)
- atychiphobia (fear of failure)
- claustrophobia (fear of confined spaces)
- hypochondria (fear of illness)
- mysophobia: (fear of dirt and germs)
When confronted with the fear it is common that the person will feel extreme anxiety, and this will often result in a panic attack. Phobias and fears can be alleviated with therapy, allowing you to live a fuller and more stress free life, knowing that you will be able to cope if ever you are confronted with your fear.
