Schizophrenia affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. People with schizophrenia may seem like they have lost touch with reality, which can be distressing for them and for their family and friends. The symptoms of schizophrenia can make it difficult to participate in usual, everyday activities, but effective therapy and treatments are available. Many people who receive treatment can engage in school or work, achieve independence, and enjoy personal relationships.
Many experiences and behaviours can be part of schizophrenia. They can start suddenly, or they might develop gradually over time.
People with schizophrenia may experience some of the following symptoms:
- a lack of interest in things
- feeling disconnected from your emotions
- difficulty concentrating
- wanting to avoid people
- hallucinations, such as hearing voices or seeing things others don’t
- delusions (strong beliefs that others don’t share), including paranoid delusions
- disorganised thinking and speech
- not wanting to look after yourself.
Therapy offers solace, understanding, and a path toward hope for individuals living with schizophrenia. It can be very difficult to live with schizophrenia, and even more so if you try to deal with it on your own, with professional support, you can find comfort and work towards living a fulfilling and happy life! You are not alone, we are here to help you.
